What Size Laptop Bag Do I Need? A Measuring Guide for 13 to 16 Inch Laptops
Measure the closed laptop, not the screen: a 16 inch MacBook Pro is narrower than a 15.6 inch Vivobook, and this guide has the published width, depth and thickness of eight laptops people actually buy in India.
Measure your closed laptop across its width, its depth and its thickest point, then choose a bag whose laptop compartment is rated at or above that footprint with roughly 1 cm of slack on each side. Do not shop by screen size alone. The 16 inch MacBook Pro measures 35.57 cm wide, while the 15.6 inch ASUS Vivobook 15 measures 35.97 cm wide, so the laptop with the larger screen label is the narrower of the two. Screen size is a diagonal measurement of the display. Bag fit is decided by the footprint of the whole machine.

Why does screen size not tell you what laptop bag to buy?
A laptop is sold by the diagonal of its screen, corner to corner. A bag has to swallow the width, depth and thickness of the closed machine. Those are different measurements, and the gap between them is set by the bezels and by how much chassis surrounds the display. Two laptops sold under the same number can differ by more than 2 cm in width.
Look at what "14 inch" covers. A 14 inch Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3 is 32.43 cm wide. A 14 inch MacBook Pro is 31.26 cm wide, according to Apple's published tech specs. That is a 1.2 cm spread inside one screen class, which is enough to decide whether a slim sleeve closes or fights you every morning.
The comparison that surprises people most runs the other way. The 16 inch MacBook Pro is 35.57 cm wide and 24.81 cm deep. The 15.6 inch ASUS Vivobook 15 is 35.97 cm wide and 23.25 cm deep. The 16 inch machine is 4 mm narrower and 1.56 cm deeper. A bag sized only by width would take the 16 inch model and reject the 15.6 inch one. If you buy by the label on the box, you are guessing.
How do I measure my laptop for a bag in two minutes?
You need a tape and two minutes. Do it with the lid shut.
- Width. Measure the front edge, left to right, at the widest point. This is the number that decides whether the laptop slides into a sleeve at all.
- Depth. Measure from the front edge to the back of the hinge. On 16 inch machines this is often the number that runs out of room first, because the hinge housing adds depth that a 15.6 inch chassis does not have.
- Thickness. Measure at the thickest point with the lid closed, usually the rear. Many Windows laptops taper, so the front and the back differ. The Dell Inspiron 15 3520, for example, is 1.70 cm at the front and 1.90 cm at the rear in its plastic build.
- Add your case. If you keep a hard shell or a folio on the laptop, add its thickness on both faces. A 2 mm shell adds 4 mm to the number the sleeve has to take.
Save those three numbers in your phone. Every bag decision after this becomes a two second comparison instead of a guess.
What are the real dimensions of the laptops people actually buy in India?
These figures come from the manufacturers' own specification sheets, not from retail listings. Weights are the starting weights that each maker publishes, and they rise with configuration.
| Laptop | Screen | Width | Depth | Thickness | Weight from |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| MacBook Air 13 | 13.6 in | 30.41 cm | 21.50 cm | 1.13 cm | 1.23 kg |
| MacBook Pro 14 | 14.2 in | 31.26 cm | 22.12 cm | 1.55 cm | 1.50 kg |
| Lenovo IdeaPad Slim 3 14 | 14 in | 32.43 cm | 21.38 cm | 1.79 cm | 1.31 kg |
| MacBook Air 15 | 15.3 in | 34.04 cm | 23.76 cm | 1.15 cm | 1.51 kg |
| Dell Inspiron 15 3520 | 15.6 in | 35.85 cm | 23.56 cm | 1.90 cm | 1.66 kg |
| ASUS Vivobook 15 | 15.6 in | 35.97 cm | 23.25 cm | 1.99 cm | 1.70 kg |
| Lenovo ThinkPad E16 Gen 2 | 16 in | 35.61 cm | 24.77 cm | 2.02 cm | 1.78 kg |
| MacBook Pro 16 | 16.2 in | 35.57 cm | 24.81 cm | 1.68 cm | 2.14 kg |

Two patterns fall out of that table. Width across the whole 13 to 16 inch range only moves about 5.5 cm, from 30.41 cm to 35.97 cm. Depth is the sharper divide: everything up to 15.6 inch stays under 23.8 cm, and then 16 inch machines jump to roughly 24.8 cm. If you are moving from a 15.6 inch laptop to a 16 inch one, depth is the measurement most likely to leave your old bag behind.
How much extra room should a laptop compartment have?
Aim for about 1 cm of clearance on the width and the depth. That is enough for the laptop to drop in without you levering it past the seams, and tight enough that it does not slide about when the bag swings. Below roughly 0.5 cm of clearance you will feel the friction every single time, and that friction is what wears the corners of a sleeve.
Thickness is more forgiving, because padding compresses. How the compartment is built matters more. A suspended sleeve is stitched so its base sits above the bottom of the bag, so when you set the bag down on a platform or a tiled office floor, the laptop's bottom edge is not what takes the impact. A sleeve sewn flat to the base gives you the padding thickness and nothing else.
8.6 L, 45 x 30 x 8 cm, 465 g empty. Two separate compartments, with a padded suspended sleeve for a laptop up to 16 inch, a front slip pocket, a rear zip pocket and a full length top zip. Water-repellent nylon.
Should I choose a backpack or a tote for a 15.6 inch laptop?
Match the compartment rating to your laptop first, then choose the carry style. A 13 to 15 inch machine, which covers the MacBook Air 13, the MacBook Pro 14, the IdeaPad Slim 3 14 and the MacBook Air 15 in the table above, fits the rating of a 15 inch compartment. A 15.6 inch or 16 inch machine needs a compartment rated to 16 inch, which is where the tote's suspended sleeve comes in.
| hybeks bag | Laptop rating | Capacity | External size | Empty weight | Price |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Drift Backpack | Up to 15 inch | 17 L | 43 x 29 x 17 cm | 560 g | Rs 5,499 |
| Drift Tote | Up to 16 inch | 8.6 L | 45 x 30 x 8 cm | 465 g | Rs 6,499 |
| Drift Sling | Phone, wallet and keys | 3.4 L | 28 x 15 x 10 cm | 175 g | Rs 3,299 |
| Drift Kit | Cables, cards, earbuds | 0.25 L | 15 x 10 x 2 cm | 40 g | Rs 1,499 |
After the rating, the two shapes diverge on volume. The Drift Backpack carries 17 L in a 43 x 29 x 17 cm body, so the laptop travels alongside a change of clothes, a lunch box and a bottle. The Drift Tote carries 8.6 L in a 45 x 30 x 8 cm body, an 8 cm profile that stays flat against you in a crowded metro coach and opens from the top in one pull. On load and posture the backpack wins; on speed of access and how it reads in a meeting, the tote does. We worked through that trade off in detail in Backpack or Tote for Work? 6 Ways to Choose the Right One in 2026.
17 L, 43 x 29 x 17 cm, 560 g empty. A dedicated compartment for a laptop up to 15 inch, a rear access compartment, a front organiser panel, padded breathable straps and a top grab handle. Water-repellent nylon.
What else has to fit beside the laptop?
A laptop that fits and a bag that works are two different tests, and the second is decided by everything travelling with the machine: a charging brick, one or two cables, earbuds, a mouse or a notebook, an ID card and a water bottle.
The charger is what most often defeats a slim sleeve case. A compact 65 W gallium nitride brick is about the size of a matchbox, while the barrel chargers shipped with many 15.6 inch Windows laptops are closer to 12 cm long with a cable tail at both ends. Measure yours before deciding a 3 L sleeve bag is enough. Loose cables are the other problem: left free in a main compartment they wrap around everything else in it. A flat organiser keeps them together and moves between bags in a second.
0.25 L, 15 x 10 x 2 cm, 40 g empty. A slim organiser for cables, cards and earbuds that slides in beside a laptop without adding bulk. Water-repellent nylon.
Frequently asked questions
Will a 15.6 inch laptop fit in a 15 inch laptop bag?
Usually it will not sit properly. A 15.6 inch Windows laptop runs 35.85 cm to 35.97 cm wide, against 34.04 cm for a MacBook Air 15, the widest of the common 15 inch class machines. That is close to 2 cm of extra width to absorb, which is more slack than a sleeve is cut with. For a 15.6 inch machine, look for a compartment rated to 16 inch.
Can a 16 inch MacBook Pro fit in a bag made for 15.6 inch laptops?
On width it can, because at 35.57 cm it is narrower than a 15.6 inch ASUS Vivobook 15. Depth is the catch. The 16 inch MacBook Pro is 24.81 cm deep against 23.25 cm for the Vivobook, so a sleeve cut tight for a 15.6 inch footprint will leave about 1.5 cm of the MacBook standing proud. Check the depth figure, not the width.
How do I measure my laptop screen size without the box?
Measure the glass diagonally, from the bottom left corner of the display area to the top right, and convert to inches by dividing the centimetres by 2.54. For buying a bag, though, this number is the least useful one you can take. Measure the width and depth of the closed machine instead.
Is a sleeve case enough, or do I need a padded compartment?
A sleeve protects against scuffs and pressure from other items in the bag. A padded compartment that is suspended above the base of the bag adds protection from the drop that happens when you set the bag down. If your laptop travels five days a week on a scooter, a bus or a metro, the second one earns its place.
How much should a work bag weigh before I put anything in it?
Every gram of bag is a gram you carry in addition to the laptop. A 15.6 inch laptop already starts at about 1.66 kg, and its charger adds 200 g to 400 g. For daily commuting, a bag with an empty weight under about 700 g keeps the total sensible. The Drift Backpack is 560 g empty and the Drift Tote is 465 g.
Does a laptop bag need to be a different size for flights?
The laptop compartment does not change, but the outer size matters. IndiGo caps cabin baggage at 55 x 35 x 25 cm per piece, with the three dimensions adding up to no more than 115 cm, and a weight limit of 7 kg. A 43 x 29 x 17 cm backpack adds up to 89 cm and a 45 x 30 x 8 cm tote to 83 cm, so both sit well inside that envelope.
Match the bag to your measurements, not the label
Three numbers from your closed laptop, one rating on the bag. The Drift range is built around 15 inch and 16 inch compartments in water-repellent nylon, in Morning Fog and Midnight Transit.
