What Fits in a 7kg Cabin Bag? A Real Packing List for Indian Domestic Flights

A 7kg cabin bag holds more than most people pack. Here is the real load-out with weights, every Indian airline's size limit, and the personal item rule worth 3kg more.

A 7kg cabin bag holds more than most people put in it. A two-night trip with a laptop lands at roughly 5 to 6 kg in a 17-litre backpack, with room left over. On IndiGo, Air India and Akasa Air you are also allowed a separate personal item of up to 3 kg, so your real allowance is closer to 10 kg than 7. SpiceJet is the exception, and that is what catches people at the gate. Below is the full load-out with what each item weighs, the size limits for every major Indian airline, and the rule that decides how much you can actually carry.

In this article

How much is 7kg, really?

Put it in objects rather than numbers. A 14-inch laptop with its charger is about 1.7 kg. Two shirts, one pair of trousers, and socks and underwear for two days come to roughly 1.2 kg. A toiletries bag is about 0.5 kg. That is 3.4 kg before you have picked up the bag itself.

Which is the part most packing guides skip: the empty weight of your bag comes out of your allowance too. A heavy shell with thick padding and a rigid frame can take a kilo before anything goes in, and that kilo is the difference between walking past the gate scale and unpacking in front of a queue.

Very few brands publish this number, so here are ours, measured empty.

Piece Capacity Empty weight Share of a 7 kg allowance
Drift Backpack 17 L 560 g 8%
Drift Tote 8.6 L 465 g 6.6%
Drift Sling 3.4 L 175 g 2.5%
Drift Kit 0.25 L 40 g 0.6%

A backpack and a sling together come to 735 g, which is a little over 10 percent of your cabin allowance spent on the bags themselves. Weigh whatever you currently fly with and compare. The number is often a surprise.

What are the cabin baggage limits on Indian airlines?

Every major Indian carrier sets the same 7 kg cabin limit. The size limits differ, and one aircraft type is tighter than the rest.

Airline Cabin bag Maximum size Personal item
IndiGo 7 kg 55 x 35 x 25 cm, sides totalling 115 cm Yes, one, up to 3 kg
Air India 7 kg 55 x 40 x 20 cm, sides totalling 115 cm Yes, one, up to 3 kg, must fit under the seat
Akasa Air 7 kg Sides totalling 115 cm Yes, one, up to 3 kg, must fit under the seat
SpiceJet, Boeing 7 kg 55 x 35 x 25 cm, sides totalling 115 cm Extra bag allowed, but 7 kg is the combined limit
SpiceJet, Q400 7 kg 50 x 35 x 23 cm, sides totalling 108 cm Same combined 7 kg limit

The SpiceJet Q400 row is the one to design around. At 50 x 35 x 23 cm it is the tightest cabin allowance flying domestic routes in India, and a bag sized for it clears every other airline on this list automatically.

What is the personal item rule, and who actually gives you one?

This is where the free capacity is, and it is the rule most flyers get wrong.

IndiGo's policy allows, in its own words, "one personal article, such as ladies' purse or a small bag containing laptop, not weighing more than 3 kgs", on top of your 7 kg cabin bag. Air India and Akasa Air both allow one additional personal item up to 3 kg, with the condition that it fits under the seat in front of you.

So on three of the four biggest carriers your working allowance is 10 kg across two bags, not 7 kg in one.

SpiceJet works differently. It permits a laptop bag or purse as an extra piece, but its policy states the total weight of cabin baggage must not exceed 7 kg. The second bag does not buy you extra kilos. Go over and the gate charges ₹750 per kilo for up to 5 kg extra, with 12 kg the maximum allowed in the cabin at all.

The practical move on IndiGo, Air India and Akasa: put the laptop and its charger in the personal item. That is roughly 1.7 kg lifted out of your main bag, which is the single biggest weight saving available to you and it costs nothing.

Two nights, laptop included, comes to about 5.3 kg. The limit is rarely the problem. Packing without a plan is.

What fits in a 17-litre bag for two nights?

Here is a real load-out with approximate weights. Weigh your own, since a heavy pair of shoes or a hardback book moves these numbers quickly.

  • 14-inch laptop, 1.4 kg
  • Laptop charger, 0.3 kg
  • Phone charger and cable, 0.1 kg
  • Power bank, 10,000 mAh, 0.2 kg
  • Two shirts, 0.4 kg
  • One pair of trousers, 0.6 kg
  • Underwear and socks for two days, 0.2 kg
  • Toiletries, 0.5 kg
  • Empty steel water bottle, 0.3 kg
  • Notebook and pen, 0.3 kg
  • A light layer or jacket, 0.4 kg

That totals about 4.7 kg of contents. Add the Drift Backpack's 560 g and the packed bag reads 5.3 kg on the gate scale, comfortably inside 7 kg with 1.7 kg of headroom for a gift on the way back.

Seventeen litres is the useful size for this. It swallows the list above without the bag going soft and bulging past the sizer, which is what actually gets a bag pulled at the gate.

17 litres at 43 x 29 x 17 cm, so its three sides total 89 cm. That clears every airline in the table above, including the SpiceJet Q400. Weighs 560 g empty. Dedicated compartment for a 15-inch laptop, rear-access pocket for valuables, water-repellent nylon.

What should go in the personal item?

Two rules govern it: it has to fit under the seat in front of you, and on Air India and Akasa it has to stay under 3 kg. Anything you want during the flight belongs here, because your main bag is going in the overhead bin and getting it down mid-flight is a small ordeal.

A sensible personal item holds your phone, wallet, keys, boarding pass, charging cable, power bank, earbuds and a book. If you are flying IndiGo, Air India or Akasa, add the laptop and charger and take that weight out of the main bag entirely.

One rule with no flexibility: power banks and spare lithium batteries travel in the cabin, never in checked baggage. Keep them in the bag that stays with you.

3.4 litres at 28 x 15 x 10 cm, which slides under any economy seat with room to spare. At 175 g it uses under 6 percent of a 3 kg personal item allowance. Quick-access front pocket for phone and boarding pass, padded back panel, adjustable chest or shoulder strap for the walk between gates.

How do you stop cables and small stuff eating your allowance?

Chargers, cables, adapters, earbuds and cards weigh very little individually. The problem they cause is different: loose in a bag they sink to the bottom, so you pack around them, repack at security, and end up carrying a spare of something you already have because you could not find it.

Keeping them in one slim organiser fixes that, and it makes the security tray step faster, since electronics come out as one unit instead of six.

0.25 litres at 15 x 10 x 2 cm and 40 g, so it costs you nothing on the scale. Slim enough to sit flat inside the backpack or the sling, holding cables, cards, earbuds and the small things that otherwise end up at the bottom. Water-repellent nylon.

What gets you stopped at the gate?

Four things, in rough order of how often they happen:

  • The scale. Gate staff weigh cabin bags on Indian domestic routes, and 7 kg is the number they read.
  • The sizer. A soft bag packed until it bulges will fail a frame it would pass half empty. Structure helps here more than a smaller nominal size.
  • A power bank in checked baggage. It has to travel in the cabin.
  • The SpiceJet combined limit. Two bags that add up to more than 7 kg, which passes without comment on three other airlines.

If you are deciding between bag shapes for everyday carry rather than for flying, our guide to choosing between a backpack and a tote for work runs through the same trade-offs on the ground.

Frequently asked questions

Is the 7kg cabin baggage limit strictly enforced in India?

Yes, more strictly than in most parts of the world. Indian carriers weigh cabin bags at the boarding gate on domestic routes, and every major airline publishes 7 kg as the limit. Treat it as a hard number rather than a guideline.

Does a laptop bag count as cabin baggage?

It depends on the airline. On IndiGo, Air India and Akasa Air a small laptop bag counts as your one personal item, up to 3 kg, carried in addition to the 7 kg cabin bag. On SpiceJet you may carry it, but its weight counts inside the same 7 kg total.

What happens if my cabin bag is overweight?

You will be asked to move items into your personal item, check the bag in, or pay. SpiceJet publishes ₹750 per kilo for up to 5 kg over, with 12 kg the maximum permitted in the cabin. Other airlines handle it at the gate, and checking a bag at that point costs you time as well as money.

Can I carry a power bank in my cabin bag?

Yes, and it must go in the cabin. Power banks and spare lithium batteries are not permitted in checked baggage on Indian flights, so keep them in whichever bag stays with you.

What is the smallest cabin bag size limit in India?

The SpiceJet Q400 at 50 x 35 x 23 cm, with the three sides totalling 108 cm. It is tighter than the 115 cm most airlines allow, so a bag chosen to fit the Q400 will pass on every other domestic carrier.

Does the weight of the bag itself count towards 7kg?

Yes. The gate scale weighs the bag with everything in it, so the empty weight of the bag comes out of your 7 kg. For reference the Drift Backpack is 560 g, the Drift Tote 465 g, the Drift Sling 175 g and the Drift Kit 40 g. A backpack and sling together take 735 g, a little over 10 percent of the allowance. It is worth knowing that number before you buy, and worth weighing your current bag before your next flight.

One bag, one personal item, no gate maths.

The Drift Backpack clears every cabin size limit in India, the Drift Sling slides under the seat as your personal item, and the Drift Kit keeps the small things findable. All in water-repellent nylon, in Morning Fog and Midnight Transit.
